1. To become an apprentice plumber

  • Your age must be at least 18 years or more.
  • Get trained as an apprentice plumber, under a licensed journeyman or contractor.  
  • Keep a record of hours worked under the licensed journeyman. This will be officially counted when qualifying for the experience requirements to become a journeyman.
  • A journeyman can supervise up to three apprentices and act as the job foreman. 

2. To become a journeyman plumber

  • Your age must be at least 18 years or more.
  • Apply for the plumbing journeyman license through the Oklahoma CIB along with an affidavit of citizenship, paying the $75 application fee.
  • Once your application gets approved, you need to meet either of the below-mentioned examination requirements.
  • Must have worked for a minimum period of three (3) years in the plumbing trade, under the licensed journeyman or,
  • Have verifiable three (3) years of experience in the plumbing trade while serving in the U.S. military or,
  • Have a verifiable out-of-state plumbing license that is current and in good standing.
  • As a part of the plumbing experience requirement, an associate degree or Career Tech diploma certifying completion of a plumbing educational program consisting of
    • a minimum of 1000 classroom hours from a school, 
    • approved by the committee, may be substituted for two (2) years of experience. 
  • A Career Tech diploma certifying completion of an educational program consisting of
    • a minimum of 500 classroom hours from a school, 
    • approved by the Committee, may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.

3. To become a plumbing contractor 

  • Age must be at least 18 years old or more.
  • Applicant must meet any one of the minimum educational requirements
  • You must have 3 years of experience in the plumbing trade while employed by a licensed Plumbing Contractor or,
  • 3 years of verifiable experience while serving in the U.S. military or,
  • Must have a verifiable out-of-state plumbing license that is current and in good standing.
  • You must have an additional 1 year of experience working as a licensed journeyman plumber.
  • After fulfilling the examination requirements, a completed application, and fees are to be submitted to the board.
  • Once the board approves the application, the applicant must pass the exam.
  • Lastly, submit proof of bond and insurance to the board.

    Applicant must submit proof of a $5,000 Corporate Surety Bond made payable to the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board, as well as a certificate of insurance fulfilling minimum insurance requirements of $50,000 as general liability insurance.
